Overview
Intelligent robotics concerns the melding of artificial perception, strategic reasoning and robotic action in potentially unstructured and time-varying environments to fulfil useful physical tasks, whether in industry or for security, healthcare, search and rescue or civil defence etc. This unit covers topics underpinning the above requirements, including sensors, sensor fusion, machine perception, environmental mapping/monitoring, path planning, localisation, mechanisms, artificial intelligence methodologies and application domains.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Assess the physical structure, sensing/actuation and programming required to develop an intelligent robot.
- 2
Formulate and design the robotic mechanism, its sensors and actuators.
- 3
Integrate robotic mechanisms, sensors and actuators into a functioning robot system.
- 4
By considering case studies, critically appraise robot systems developed by others.
Workload and teaching

- Teaching approachActive learning
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
Practicals will be delivered online
Lectures will be delivered online
Students will work in groups of 3-4 to implement an intelligent robot system. We will work in hybrid mode, where one group member is on campus while the others participate remotely
