Overview

This unit applies microeconomic principles and empirical methods to explain and predict human behaviours and decisions. The emphasis is on the application of microeconomic theories to explain decisions by individuals and firms as well the applications of empirical methods to test the accuracy and relevance of various theoretical predictions. Some of the topics that will be discussed include the scientific nature of economics, individual decision-making processes on private and public goods and microeconomics of social and political issues.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    upgrade the analytical and quantitative skills for microeconomics above the intermediate level

    identify and describe the way in which economists apply economic theories and concepts to analyse various behaviours and issues

    apply empirical methods to test the accuracy and relevance of various economic models

    gain hands-on experience in the application of microeconomic principles to the analysis of a range of economic issues

    demonstrate the ability to evaluate the contributions and limitations of economic analysis for understanding and informing policy options.

Workload and teaching

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
