This unit investigates how the success of a state’s economic development can be understood through cultural and institutional lenses. It explores the role of institutions and their influence on entrepreneurship and economic growth, including the success of sectoral shifts from rural agriculture to industry and services in cities. You will study how the success or failure of institutions depend on cultural factors.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    understand that economic development does not only depend on saving and investment, but also on culture (institutions)

    understand the cultural aspects of the “middle income trap” and the economic and cultural requirements of successful modernisation

    critically evaluate the evidence and the theoretical background to the claim that “institutions” are needed for successful market economies

    analyse and evaluate how trust and tolerance can help economic development.

Workload and teaching
