Overview
In recent times, cryptocurrency has gained global attention and has been the subject of discussion in various news media, policy-making bodies, government entities, and financial institutions. This unit concentrates on investigating the economic implications of cryptocurrency to solidify our understanding of how this ecosystem works. It will analyse the nature and operation of digital currency in comparison to traditional payment and banking systems, describe blockchain technology, examine the structure of smart contracts and decentralised applications, and compare the trade-offs between risk and return for investments in cryptocurrency. Other related issues to be discussed include investing in blockchain and valuations of cryptocurrencies, investment tokens, regulation and taxation, and central bank digital assets.
