Overview

This unit will introduce you to the requirements of writing for academic purposes. It will provide you with a range of composition skills that are essential for producing academic essays, reports and reviews. The unit will introduce writing styles and conventions appropriate to university study and provide you with practical insights into structuring cohesive academic essays and reports. You will be introduced to the various styles and genres of structuring and composing writing for academic purposes. Emphasis is focused upon understanding the detailed requirements of written assignments, referencing, and developing the necessary form and structure appropriate to the required task.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Have well developed referencing and attribution practices that adequately cite the work of contributing sources

    Produce essays and reports that present a critical argument and adhere to the conventions of academic presentation.

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding.
