Overview
This unit is the first of four that develop and enhance the health-related knowledge, skills and capabilities of Monash HPE pre-service teachers. Health and education are powerful partners in a number of contexts including health promotion, public health, schooling and public pedagogy. In recognition of this the unit acts as the foundation for exploring the various dimensions, meanings and processes of health with a focus on health education. This includes considering the multi-dimensional and inter-related aspects of ‘health’ in First Nations and other contexts as well as other conceptualisations such as wellbeing. A key aim of the unit is to build the necessary preliminary health knowledge base and starting technical skills to teach health education in a variety of contexts, for example Health and Physical Education (HPE). The unit takes an approach that includes physical practice of developing skills as well as a set of hurdles in mindfulness, academic and research skills and some cooperative learning.
