Overview

This unit develops your knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures with a particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and explores Indigenous perspectives on teaching and learning. You will develop your understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. You will explore and utilise education programs which have successfully engaged with learners from Indigenous and traditionally oriented societies and achieved improvements in their education outcomes. You will also develop broad knowledge, understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and languages. You will develop skills and insights into how to engage learners from Indigenous and traditional communities and create partnerships to improve learning outcomes.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Understand cultural protocols and terms as they pertain to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

    Demonstrate understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds by developing culturally responsive curriculum practices.

Minimum total expected workload equals 144 hours per semester/term comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • 2 hours per week

(b.) Requirements for offshore Kaplan-based students:

  • one intensive block (usually from Thursday to Sunday)
  • at least 4 hours of online study per term

(c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • independent study to make up the minimum required hours per week

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding. Additionally, this unit will adopt a critical exploratory learning model to build your awareness and confidence in this domain.
