Overview
This unit uses creative approaches to develop your knowledge and understanding of English discipline specific content. You will learn how to develop personal literacy through integrated approaches and an explicit focus on reading recovery and language development across reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will explore a wide range of literature suitable for children and engage with various approaches to storytelling and language arts, including digital and cross-arts storytelling. You will develop your skills in English and literacy including how to critically analyse texts, how to select and present literature for children and methods of integrating language arts across the curriculum. By developing your own English communication skills as story makers and tellers, you will gain the ability to design pedagogies for engaging children in literature and developing literacies through storytelling and to develop literacy leadership.

Workload and teaching

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:
(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:
- on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement
(b.) Requirements for offshore Kaplan-based students:
- one intensive block (usually from Thursday to Sunday)
- at least 4 hours of online study per term
(c.) Additional requirements (all students):
- self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding. Additionally, you may also engage in role play, performative storytelling, digital storytelling, visual thinking strategies paired with group debates, shared art/digital images and video with peer discussion, and arts-based narrative inquiry.
These given teaching activities are intended to inspire and motivate you to actively engage with the content knowledge in a way that embodies both a critical and scholarly manner. Class activities are intended to open your understanding to global issues and apply higher order critical thinking and creativity as well as create innovative solutions to current, relevant challenges.
