Overview

This unit develops your understanding of the requirements placed upon education services and early years professionals working in a range of settings to meet legislative and policy requirements in their field. The unit develops your knowledge of pedagogical practice and pedagogical leadership, administration, management and general leadership skills. During your involvement in a learning community you will engage in a small research inquiry to examine the pedagogical practices within it. You will develop understanding of how effective pedagogical and administrative leadership provides the intellectual tools to support the development of inclusive, culturally safe and secure places for all learners and professionals who participate in educational services.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Understand leadership and management in local and international education settings

    Critically analyse different approaches to leadership and apply this to a broad range of educational contexts

    Apply leadership knowledge in working with and establishing policies expected in mandated and current requirements

    Understand the importance and impact of social, cultural and political factors on leadership roles in educational settings and the implications of these for children's learning

  5. 5

    Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges of leadership in dynamic educational environments and an ability to make professional and ethical decisions.

Workload and teaching

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement

(b.) Requirements for offshore Kaplan-based students:

  • one intensive block (usually from Thursday to Sunday)
  • at least 4 hours of online study per term

(c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours
