Overview

This unit develops your understanding of arts education in the primary years in relation to Victorian and Australian curriculum. Specifically, it explores arts education with a focus on music, media, visual arts, dance and drama in the primary years. You are encouraged to develop your competencies as teachers, artists and researchers in the arts. A focal point of the unit is on nurturing your creativity and critical thinking skills. The unit embraces arts education pedagogy that draws on the perspectives of the generalist primary school teacher, specialist arts teachers and children.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Develop arts lessons that include a focus on integrating the arts with the curriculum and develop assessment strategies for the arts

    Explore and develop your own arts skills and creative pedagogical practices in the arts

    Identify, evaluate and interpret a range of relevant curriculum documents and resources for teaching the arts

  5. 5

    Demonstrate an understanding of the connections between the arts, sustainability, health and wellbeing, interculturality, information and communication technologies (ICTs), and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Oceanic and Asian contexts.

Workload and teaching

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding. Additionally, this unit involves studio teaching and classes. You will be positioned as active, inquiry-based learners who explore the arts through embodied arts-based practice, research and teaching.
