Overview

The ubiquitous nature of text creation in young people’s lives has increased, in part due to the advancement of technology and digital connectivity. Forms of writing have expanded along with opportunities for publication to intended and unintended audiences. Young people are knowledge producers, using various textual forms to influence the discourses of genre and mode. This has implications for the teaching of writing. This unit will encourage you to critically reflect on what it means to be a ‘text creator’ through considering a range of theories, issues, debates, pedagogical practices and your own writing identities and practices. You will be encouraged to explore not only different genres and forms of writing, but also different discourses within genres which are socioculturally influenced, and how these influences are impacting literacy teaching and learning.
