Overview

This unit introduces you to the concepts, structure, pedagogical and curriculum-related issues in arts education, from Foundation to Year 8, but with particular focus on teaching in, about and through the arts in primary and middle schools. It provides you with an overview of different approaches to theories and practices of arts education. It prepares you for the tasks of selecting content and designing units of work in the arts. You will explore discipline-based arts (music, dance, drama, visual arts and media arts), as well as cross-curricula and integrative approaches to the arts.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours
