Overview
This unit explores current Victorian and Australian curriculum as well as international trends in the teaching and learning of health and physical education (HPE). The unit enables you to build knowledge and gain experience in the unique teaching and learning environment of HPE. It develops your understanding of historical, philosophical and pedagogical foundations of HPE, enabling you to develop confidence and competence in teaching HPE to students in the primary years.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Understand and explore teaching strategies to implement the current Victorian and Australian curriculum

Demonstrate knowledge of the philosophy, history and contemporary status of school physical education

Develop, design and plan lessons, units and curricula that are developmentally appropriate for levels Foundation to Year 8

Understand, utilise and have participated experientially in a variety of physical education specific pedagogies (e.g. fundamental motor skills, thematics, game-centred approaches) that promote moving-related educative experiences

Communicate concepts and information about health and health-related matters as they pertain to health education (e.g. drug education, sexuality education) to a variety of audiences.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.
Usually, you can expect to engage with:
• 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and
• the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study
Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This subject will be delivered via a mix of online content, guest sessions and face-to-face classes. Throughout the unit you will be involved in peer-assisted activities by way of presentations and group tasks that provide you with an opportunity to apply curriculum and pedagogical knowledge in HPE.
At times you will need to prepare content prior to the classes to get the most out of the learning and activities. Some classes will be undertaken off site, including fieldwork on campus and practical based activities at Monash Sport to cater for movement and physical education activities. You will need to wear appropriate active wear clothing and footwear to participate.
