Overview

This unit focuses on the incidence of mental health issues and their effects on the individual, family and community. It examines a variety of issues relating to trauma and grief, addictions to alcohol, drugs and other mental health issues. You will examine how the normal highs and lows of life can be managed and how declining mental health can affect feelings, thoughts and actions. You are introduced to a number of therapeutic approaches.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  • 20 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities

Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

The teaching approach of this unit includes case-based teaching (using case studies to discuss mental health issues), scheduled classes (presenting and discussing counselling theory), problem-based learning (where students are asked to develop strategies to respond to case studies), role-play (including counselling techniques), and the Personal Storytelling Series (interviews with individuals sharing their experiences of mental health issues and attending counselling).
