Requisites
Overview
This unit introduces you to the teaching profession. You will build your professional skills, knowledge, and understanding of teaching through a process of personal inquiry, exploration of exemplary practices, and compliance with requirements through a range of structures, educative frameworks, and models that support, inform or regulate practice. You will develop a critical understanding of the notion of adolescence, adolescent identities and the societal and cultural influences that inform the teaching of adolescent learners. The biological, sociological, psychological and cognitive stages of development during adolescence will be explored and how these influence learner engagement in the secondary classroom. Further, you will examine how adolescent development influences student learning and the implications of this for your teaching. As a result of this work, you will develop a deeper understanding of the connection between professional codes of conduct, school policies, your classroom practices and student learning. Your ongoing professional learning needs will be explored through examination of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
