Overview

This unit builds on EDF5135 (English education in the secondary years A) by extending your knowledge, skills and capacities. You will continue to build a strong foundation for your career-long professional learning as a teacher of English language, literature, literacy and related subjects in secondary school (Years 7 to 12). You will work collaboratively and independently to plan and implement appropriate curriculum in the area of English language. You will also learn how teachers plan for and undertake educational projects and research as part of your professional work. You will develop a finely honed appreciation of how language, in its various modes and uses, including information and communication technologies (ICT), mediates the learning of all young people in school and in their outside-school lives. Through an examination of a range of national and international education policies and the Australian Curriculum: English, you will be familiarised with current developments in the theory and practice of English literacy education, with a particular focus on senior English curriculums. The unit informs and facilitates your active contributions to contemporary dialogue within the English teaching profession, drawing both on rich traditions and exciting innovations in English education in Australia and internationally.

Workload and teaching

  • Teaching approachActive learning

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

For the unit teaching schedule, please visit the timetable.

The teaching approaches used in this unit include: inquiry-based learning; dialogic teaching and learning (including peer assisted learning); enacting practices for the secondary English classroom; research activities; role plays and online forum participation. The combination of scheduled classes, online participation and group collaboration provide a range of opportunities to explore key ideas and approaches to English teaching. In addition, the learning and teaching in this unit are constructed around a professional experience placement in a secondary school setting. This professional experience enables students to inquire into and critically appreciate the nuances and complexities of intellectual, imaginative, curriculum and relational elements in teachers’ work.

In this unit you will be required to demonstrate your ability to collaborate with your peers, lecturers and professional colleagues in schools. You will also be required to show evidence of regular engagement with the week to week readings prescribed for the unit. Assignment work is also based around collaborative professional engagement with ideas, that maximise the opportunities for group learning and participation. You are expected to attend and participate in all schedule class sessions. Lecturers are happy to discuss issues with you and to engage in critical dialogue about experiences and/or readings in the unit, provided that you can demonstrate that you have taken your responsibilities in the teaching and learning relationship seriously.
