Overview

This unit with EDF5161 (Mathematics education in the secondary years A) explores the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools. The units introduce you to the language, methods and major ideas useful in mathematics teaching, and focus on content, pedagogy and the interrelationships between them. You will be provided with opportunities to develop your subject matter knowledge and skills relevant to teaching in secondary schools and refine your attitudes through reflecting on new and past experiences. The units prepare you to teach mathematics and consider the philosophy and evidence-based research that underpins your teaching. You will be encouraged to develop an understanding of the subject discipline's place within secondary schools, at both senior level (Years 11 and 12) in this unit and junior levels (Years 7 to 10) in EDF5161. Together, the units emphasise a view of learning about teaching as an ongoing, collaborative inquiry that is developed through critical reflection and research on experience.
