Overview

Building on EDF5163 Media education in the secondary years A, this unit continues to prepare you as a specialist secondary teacher of media arts. Drawing on a range of national and international literature, it develops your critical understandings of historical and current debates in media arts education including trends in contemporary practice and curriculum development. Working collaboratively and independently you will examine and demonstrate different approaches to teaching and researching key media topics with a focus on the VCE Media study design. You will be required to demonstrate skills and knowledge required to teach and assess VCE Media, including developing rubrics and applying prescribed assessment procedures. Topics covered include narrative, representation, media form, media production processes, and issues in the media.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    understand and critically evaluate different approaches to teaching and assessing media arts

    identify, evaluate and use a variety of resources for teaching media studies across VCE Media

    demonstrate production skills and understanding of production processes relevant to teaching media arts at Year 11 and Year 12

    develop and demonstrate understanding of teacher generated and prescribed assessment programs for Years 11 and 12 media that include considerations of students of diverse backgrounds and abilities

  6. 6

    understand the ethical, safety and legal issues associated with the teaching of media and develop appropriate procedures to respond to these issues.

Classes will be interactive and will allow for the types of presentations and explanations that you would receive in a more formal class setting. They will also enable you to experience different types of media learning activities and resources that you may use with your own media students. You can expect to work together in small groups to develop media curriculum and learning resources, practice various media teaching methods, and discuss various approaches to teaching media.
