Overview

This unit further develops the understandings of some major teaching and learning methods and ideas useful in contemporary music education. It expands the knowledge and understandings developed in EDF5167 Music education in the secondary years 2A. In particular, the unit explores the knowledge and skills inherent within major music methodologies such as Kodaly, Dalcroze and Orff, and the application of these new understandings to the secondary music classroom. You will be encouraged to share your past experiences in these methodologies and, in doing so, build a better understanding and basis for future practice as an educator. The practical aspects of school music programs will be explored through a research-based piece which evaluates a school instrumental program, underpinned by data gathered while on practicum. The unit employs a pedagogical approach that connects theoretical and experiential learning, understanding these embedded practices to be interrelated and interdependent. This experiential learning is furthered by your previous or current involvement in a musical production. The skills, knowledge and capacities you learn through your involvement in a musical production are applied to the real school musical experience when you lead your own students in the development of a school musical.

Workload and teaching

  • Tutorials24 hours
  • Teaching approachActive learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.

Usually, you can expect to engage with:

• 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and
• the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study

Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

*Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements

This unit uses a blended learning approach which incorporates a combination of scheduled classes, online discussion forums, question and answer forums and 'real-time' posting of student teaching activities. Classes will address topics such as Dalcroze, Kodaly and Orff methodologies, experiential learning and musical production preparation and performance.

There is an expectation that you will engage with the online discussions and forums and will contribute to the sharing of ideas and knowledge based on your own prior experience, regularly throughout the semester. In addition to attending classes, you will complete the unit via interaction with written course materials, readings, completion of set tasks, participation in online discussions and activities, self-directed learning and participation in a musical production. As you will preferably be completing a teaching practicum during the semester this unit is studied, workload is reduced during the weeks of placement.
