Overview

The successful science (including mathematics) educator understands the development of knowledge, skills and abilities in science and how to transform that content knowledge through facilitating learning. This unit focuses on how science knowledge shifts and changes over time and through technological and social change. The contemporary practices of science and mathematics, and the resultant knowledge arising from such practices, have significantly changed to become inter-, multi- and trans-disciplinary in nature. This influences the ways in which new knowledge is generated and represented through models and explanations. The unit is taught in an interdisciplinary approach, across faculties, and provides authentic learning settings in which new science practices are explored and examined. It addresses the learning of pre-service and in-service teachers as well as those who communicate science to a range of audiences. It positions educators at all career stages and across learning contexts to lead and inspire learning around science.

For the unit teaching schedule, please visit the timetable.

Scheduled classes and online activities are designed to encourage you to explore and build on your current understandings of the Nature of Science (NoS). Your views will be challenged and extended through discussions with research scientists and science educators to investigate how contemporary science is practiced in authentic settings. You will then seek to identify the skills and capabilities required by your students to best prepare them to engage with contemporary science practices and to enrich their understanding of science as a human endeavour and the impact it has on their lives.

In this unit you will engage in collaborative classes, online discussion forums, online readings and a range of web based resources. It is expected that you will undertake a workplace visit to conduct an interview with a scientist(s) in an authentic research setting. A list of participating Monash Research Centres will be provided. You are encouraged to share your industry based learning experiences with the preparation of a short video report and through discussion with your peers during classes and online engagement.
