Overview

In this unit, you will reflect on a range of contemporary perspectives of the child in context, with an emphasis on how contextual and environmental factors inform and shape discourses of ‘the child’ within early childhood education. As a professional in the field, you will explore the range of contextual, environmental and bioecological factors which may impact on pedagogical decisions and approaches based on understandings of the child in context and the implications this has on understanding of the child’s learning and development.  Among these contextual factors, you may explore contemporary issues such as family structures, cultural and linguistic backgrounds and socio-economic backgrounds, with a view to examining the learning and teaching implications. This will include, considering policy trends in relation to these contemporary issues, and in particular, policy discourse and its positioning of the child in context. You will also consider the influence of the media and the impact on the child in context.  This will be facilitated through an examination of the research within early childhood education, assisting you to develop a holistic and accurate perspective of the context.  At its core, this unit will focus on contextual elements which contribute and influence the development of the child.
