Overview

In this unit you will engage with, and reflect on a wide range of evidence from research findings within the field of mathematics education to determine the features of highly effective pedagogies in mathematics that are relevant for 21st century learners. A second focus for the unit is examining evidence-based approaches and models for improving mathematics teaching, and considering the implications of this research for your own leadership of mathematics teaching improvement cycles. This will include approaches and models for leading cultural shifts in mathematics teaching and learning, and facilitating improvement in mathematical engagement for all. This includes the processes for gathering evidence about mathematics and numeracy teaching and student learning, the processes for analysing such evidence and the techniques of preparing reports that can serve as an initiator of improvement.

  1. 1

critique the research literature to identify the features of highly effective pedagogies in mathematics that are relevant for 21st century learners

  2. 2

examine evidence-based strategies for effective leadership of primary mathematics teachers

  3. 3

critically evaluate research and commentary on approaches and models for leading cultural shifts in mathematics teaching and learning

  4. 4

facilitate improvements in mathematical engagement following a review of approaches to the teaching and learning of mathematics across the school

  5. 5

develop an appropriate strategy, supported by relevant research and academic literature, for leading cultural shifts in mathematics teaching and learning, and facilitating improvement in mathematical engagement.
