Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs) and explore a range of planning and teaching strategies that can be used to create effective learning environments in diverse primary school settings. The importance of context in choosing and implementing appropriate communication, management and teaching strategies will be a key idea consistent throughout all topics. Understanding students as learners is also an essential element of the unit. Of particular emphasis will be the intertwining nature of theoretical and practical aspects of professional knowledge and practice, with you being asked to apply theory in practice and to theorise your own and others’ practices through reflective thinking and dialogue. The unit will be delivered in ways that illustrate the practices being introduced, and will allow for explicit discussion, unpacking, theorising and reflecting on the pedagogical strategies being demonstrated and modelled.
