Overview

This unit will support you to expand your skill, knowledge and understanding of the aspirations and needs of Indigenous students by focusing on the development of your approach to curriculum and pedagogy in Indigenous Education. 

By supporting you to gain confidence in curating your learning experiences, this unit will enhance the synergy between teaching experiences, extensive literature, and an array of teaching and learning resources, enabling you to develop your professional confidence and be able to demonstrate broad knowledge and insight into how you can engage Indigenous learners, their parents and caregivers, and employ innovative ICT to improve academic outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the impact of Indigenous culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds

    demonstrate broad knowledge of, understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages

  3. 3

    demonstrate understanding of the impact of government policies as they pertain to the education of Indigenous peoples and the place of Indigenous Education in mainstream education systems

    become aware of issues pertaining to the retention and maintenance of Indigenous approaches to curriculum development

    become aware of the use of culturally-inclusive pedagogical approaches

    demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of Indigenous students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds

    demonstrate an ability to implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities

    demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of how to implement a broad range of strategies for involving Indigenous parents and caregivers effectively, sensitively and confidentially in the educative process.
