Overview

This unit develops understandings of English learning in the Victorian and Australian curriculum with a particular focus on learning across Foundation to Year 2, The unit focuses on teaching young students to use English literacy to communicate in a diverse social, cultural and technological world and introduces conceptual frameworks for understanding and critiquing the processes of how children learn about literacy. The teaching of English is examined from a number of current theoretical perspectives, with a focus on evidenced based practices for early reading instruction and the integration of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The unit explores effective pedagogies in oral language, reading, writing and visual literacies, and includes the use of information and communication technologies, to support the design of responsive, differentiated literacy experiences that advance students’ learning.
