Overview

This unit provides you with a critical understanding of the notion of adolescence, adolescent identities and the societal and cultural influences that inform the teaching of adolescent learners. The biological, sociological, psychological and cognitive stages of development during adolescence will be explored and how these influence learner engagement in the secondary classroom. The unit will consider young people’s physical, social and intellectual development and student diversity. Utilising a broad range of research, you will examine how adolescent development influences student learning and the implications of this for your teaching. You will explore the broad nature of adolescent cultural worlds and draw on significant features of such worlds to examine different forms of engaging curriculum. You will apply your understanding and design relevant and engaging curriculum for adolescent learning.
