Overview

The unit will provide you with an introduction to key aspects of teaching, learning and child development. You will develop your knowledge of children’s physical, social and intellectual development and what this means for your teaching and supporting students as learners. You will also be introduced to key policies and legislation that will influence your practice as a teacher including the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs), codes of ethics and other policies and legislation that you will engage with and respond to as a teacher. The unit will explore a range of planning and teaching strategies, considered in relation to children’s development that can be used to create effective learning environments.  The importance of context in choosing and implementing appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication, behaviour management and teaching strategies will be a key idea consistent throughout all topics enabling you to develop skills to plan, organise and manage classroom activities. The unit will encourage you to reflect on a range of practices and consider your own professional learning needs and identify potential sources of professional learning.

    demonstrate knowledge of policies, legislation and strategies for creating supportive and safe learning environments
