Overview

In this unit, you will consider the relationship between literacy and numeracy across the curriculum. To begin, you will examine why literacy and numeracy are important to focus upon across the curriculum. The remainder of the unit is split between a deliberate focus on literacy and then on numeracy.

From a literacy perspective, you will be oriented to the notion of literacy practice as fundamental to living in the world and how we learn, both formally and informally. Literacy practices will be positioned in relationship to learning. You will examine literacy/literacies across the curriculum as a set of practices which are socially situated, developing from birth and beyond. You will explore how meanings are made and communicated through various modes, including reading, writing, speaking, and viewing.

From a numeracy perspective, you will learn about the relationship between numeracy and mathematics as applied to both learners and teachers. Being numerate is an expected outcome of schooling; everyone, as an informed citizen, needs to deal with the numeracy demands within everyday life, work, and education contexts. You will explore the numeracy demands embedded across the school curriculum in a range of relevant contexts at all school levels, as well as within disciplines.
