Requisites

Enrolment rules

PREREQUISITES:

Australian VCE Mathematical methods (Units 3 & 4) or VCE Specialist mathematics (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent

AND

Australian VCE Physics (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent (Recommended).

CO-REQUISITE:

You must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or an engineering double degree or with permission from the Faculty of Engineering.

Overview

This unit develops methods for analysing complex problems. The basics of statics and material properties are introduced and used to analyse structures such as beams, cantilevers and truss sections. This knowledge is used to design, analyse, build and test a structural component. Simplifications are implicit in the methods used in this analysis. These simplifications will be examined carefully and scrutinised in a broader cross-disciplinary context through problems related to the system being designed. The methods considered will include: the use of simplifications, assumptions, constraints, boundary conditions and levels of required precision.

The outcome of the structural analysis and testing will be compared and the suitability of the simplifications used will be scrutinised. You will gain knowledge about the methods engineers use to address complex problems across disciplines. Alongside this “engineering thinking”, you will also gain insight into the role of different specialisations of engineering in society. Communication and teamwork skills will be developed through teamwork tasks.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Determine reactions and internal member forces in simple truss and beam systems and carry out limit state design to select appropriately sized members.

  2. 2

Determine the strength of structural materials to inform engineering designs with considerations to performance, cost, sustainability and societal impact.

  3. 3

Determine the steady-state performance of simple systems involving levers, gears, springs and pulleys using appropriate engineering problem-solving methodologies.

  4. 4

Propose concept designs that solve engineering problems and justify finalised design with considerations of key variables, assumptions and system boundaries.

  5. 5

Identify appropriate engineering tools and techniques to develop, validate and convey designs and solutions.

  6. 6

Identify roles and responsibilities within a team and reflect on self and team behaviours that contribute to the successful conduct of a project.

Workload and teaching

  • Practical activities36 hours
  • Assessments4 hours
  • Workshops24 hours
  • Teaching approachActive learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

Teaching and learning method

In this unit, formal contact hours consist of weekly workshops and practical classes. Learning in the unit is through multiple methods consisting of:

  • Pre-workshop work with online quiz assessment
  • Workshop and practical class engagement
  • Completion of in-semester content tests
  • Completion of a major project
  • Completing Worksheet and practice questions throughout the semester

Practical class allocation

Weekly 3 hr practical classes commence in Week 1, and are enrolled into using Allocate Plus. Students must attend the practical class they are allocated to, as work in these sessions is undertaken primarily in project teams.

Teaching approach

In a typical week, you are expected to:

  • Watch online videos prior to attending workshops. This will be assessed in a weekly pre-workshop online quiz in Moodle.
  • Attend workshops that focus on the application of the weekly discipline-specific topics and examples.
  • Perform self-study by completing the Worksheet and practice questions and attempting optional related practice quizzes.

Attend weekly practical classes, complete individual and team tasks there based on the material taught in the Workshops which are then reinforced through the major team design and build project.

Learning resources

Required resources

  • You should bring an internet-enabled device (laptop, tablet, mobile phone) to workshops in order to use the in-class audience response system.
  • You will need a working webcam on the laptop or computer, especially if you are studying online.
  • You are expected to bring a laptop to each practical class to work on experiments and projects.
