Enrolment rules
You must be currently enrolled in a master’s course in engineering or related STEM and in a related discipline. The unit assumes that you have the necessary foundational knowledge.
CO-REQUISITE: If you are studying E6011 Master of Professional Engineering, you must enrol in ENG0003 Professional engineering continuous professional development at the same time as ENG5005 or ENG5006
Overview
Together with ENG5005, this unit provides a challenging opportunity for you to pursue an independent, self-guided research review aimed at advancing the body of knowledge relevant to the topic. The review will involve a critical assessment of the current literature and will include a combination of literature review, proposing hypotheses, experimental design, and preliminary experimental investigation. The project and its outcomes will be communicated to a wider audience via a technical review paper, and oral presentations. This unit is the second part of a two-unit project.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Formulate a research plan based on the scientific method coupled with a rational Design of Experiments approach.
- 2
Critically evaluate the current scientific literature relevant to the topic and assess its limitations based on an extensive literature review.
- 3
Evaluate data, and support the validity of the findings by quantifying errors.
- 4
Convey their findings in both written and verbal formats, and critique and evaluate the work of others.
- 5
Engage in regular self-assessment and peer-assessment of individual and team performance as a primary means of tracking continuing professional development.
Workload and teaching
- Teaching approachResearch activities
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
You will apply your knowledge of engineering theory to a real-world, research application. You will work in a team to refine and complete a research project with direct expert supervision. If you are an international student, you will complete the research project remotely, using online communication (Zoom) and project management tools to complete a project based on simulations / pre-existing data.
