Overview

The unit appraises and explores the relationship between projects, programs, and portfolios within an organisational context. It includes governance of the project function, alignment with strategic objectives and the creation of value for the organisation. Leadership theories and the competencies of project leadership, which are required to support effective governance when managing projects, are reviewed.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Analyse and apply the principles and elements of OPM including governance, strategy alignment, risk and benefits at the portfolio, program and project level of engineering-based organisations and project activities to achieve organisational objectives.

    Leverage a systems thinking approach to OPM to better appreciate and interpret the interdependencies.

    Identify and address challenges in implementing OPM within engineering-based organisations to delivering outcomes.

    Analyse and evaluate the role of digital technologies and AI in enhancing OPM.

    Differentiate and communicate the structures and functions of fit-for-purpose Portfolio/Program/Project Management Offices (PMOs) to support engineering and related projects within organisations.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3 - 6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6 - 9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

This unit includes problem-based learning approaches, where you engage in research, integrate theory and practice and apply knowledge and skills to develop viable solutions in response to a problem or set of problems.

This unit includes case-based teaching, where you apply your knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to solve complex contextual scenarios. Activities are often designed so that there is not one clear answer, but you need to work together to examine, analyse and make decisions to resolve the situation.

In this unit, you will participate in experiential learning by visiting cultural, geographical and/or industrial sites relevant to your studies.

You will actively apply your knowledge, skills and attributes in interactive, collaborative and reflective activities.
