Overview
This unit provides an introduction to the monitoring of plants, water and soils. It provides hands-on and industry relevant experience in the tools and techniques for conducting a multi-disciplinary environmental assessment. Techniques for the design, implementation and analysis of environmental monitoring are examined. To increase the successful implementation of monitoring programmes in management protocols, ways to incorporate science in decision-making are explored. During this unit you will implement an environmental monitoring programme to generate reports on the state of the environment at Monash University.

This unit takes a heavily industry-relevant approach to developing skills in environmental sampling and monitoring. You will undertake a series of environmental assessments of the Jock Marshall Reserve on campus, as well as engage with off-campus field trips to develop your practical assessment skills and your capabilities around industry-standard report writing. The interactive seminars focus tightly on questions and methods that are important for environmental assessment in a consultancy or governance capacity. Wherever possible, we also make an effort to bring working consultants into the learning environment to answer questions about their roles.
