Enrolment rules

To be successful in this unit, background knowledge and application of maths is required at the equivalent of VCE Year 12 level.  You may have satisfied this by completing relevant prerequisite unit/s, or you have covered relevant topics in your final years of secondary study.  You should self-assess your maths competency prior to enrolling in this unit.

Overview

Further develops statistical concepts from ETB1100 Business statistics and their application to business sectors such as finance, accounting and marketing. Sources of data and sampling techniques are examined. Confidence interval estimation for single populations, and a focus on hypothesis testing both for single populations and between populations to identify significant findings. Commonly used modelling methods in industry - simple and multiple regression for both linear and non-linear models. Introduction to analysis of variance and non-parametric methods. Emphasis throughout is on interpretation of results that provides insight and value to management. Excel software will be used.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    demonstrate an understanding of sampling design and apply appropriate sampling methods relevant to the business context at hand

    demonstrate an understanding of the importance of statistical inference in business, specifically, be able to determine and interpret significant differences required for decision making

    demonstrate the ability to conduct and understand regression analyses, as well as interpret the findings and communicate their business value

    demonstrate an understanding of non-parametric methods and their role when applied in business.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
