Overview
Some might describe engineering through a purely mathematical lens; however, it necessarily includes a liberal application of domain specific knowledge (engineering fields) and technology (hardware and software) to solve problems, especially at scale. Large-scale software projects are a critical part of all engineering fields in industry. Perhaps a chemical engineering firm might need a system to simulate biochemical reactions to find better ways for producing green hydrogen. Or a civil engineering firm might need to identify the relationship between changes to playground designs and their impact on safety. Through this unit, you will work on a large-scale software project (web application) in remote teams working independently and collaboratively. The project will give you an appreciation of how large software projects can be decomposed into smaller segments, built and integrated into individual systems. You also gain an understanding of the abilities and limitations of such systems (within the context of web development) and learn methodological processes that support this. You will develop programming skills for web development (HTML, CSS and Javascript). Some prior programming knowledge would be advantageous, but not required.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Describe the capabilities and limitations of software engineering methodologies and approaches, including topical issues for software engineering
- 2
Design and construct responsive web applications using a software engineering methodology and modern web frameworks
- 3
Manage the development process using appropriate IT Tools such as a code editor, debugger, task tracking and team communication tools
- 4
Generate meaningful written technical documentation in a standard format
Workload and teaching
- Practical activities42 hours
- Workshops18 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
2 hour Workshops weeks 1-9
3 hour Practical weeks 1-9 and 5 hour practical each week in weeks 10-12.
This unit uses a blended active learning approach that introduces you to topics via online written and video material. You are expected to prepare for the week by studying this content, then attending an expert-led workshop where the concepts are reviewed and where activities are provided to apply your knowledge on the activity within the class. You will gain further practical experience via hands-on practical classes.
