Overview

This unit focuses on the implementation and management of content for mobile devices. Persistent and client-side data management, storage mechanisms, as well as data synchronization from different sources, data dissemination, data caching and invalidation are covered, particularly data consistency and integrity, location based querying, query optimisation and transaction processing. Push, pull and broadcast techniques are covered. The unit's emphasis is on mobile data as opposed to the traditional stationery databases.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Differentiate between mobile data and traditional stationery databases;

  2. 2

    Explain the concepts required for efficient persistent and client-side data management;

  3. 3

    Design and implement mobile databases that apply the principles of mobile storage mechanisms, mobile transaction management, and recovery;

    Demonstrate the use and impact of multi-source data synchronisation, data caching and invalidation, and data consistency and integrity in mobile data management;

  5. 5

    Apply push, pull and broadcast data techniques to the design and evaluation of mobile databases.

Workload and teaching

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours:

  • Two hours lectures
  • Two hours laboratories

(b.) Additional requirements: A minimum of 8 hours of independent study per week for completing laboratory activities, assignments, private study and revision.
