Overview
This honours practice unit extends the Monash IT Industry Practice Program by requiring you to engage in research-informed professional practice within a student-led company. You will contribute to the company’s mission through advanced project work while beginning to frame aspects of that work as applied, professionally oriented research.
You will identify a problem, opportunity, uncertainty or knowledge gap within your company context and develop a structured research-engagement plan. This may involve reviewing relevant literature or industry evidence, analysing existing systems or practices, designing an investigation, evaluating alternative approaches, collecting and interpreting data, prototyping, experimentation, technical evaluation, or studying the impact of a product, service, process or intervention.
The unit is designed to support the transition from advanced professional contribution toward honours-level research engagement. You will be expected to demonstrate independence, judgement, responsibility and initiative, while still working with appropriate academic, mentor and company support. Your research activity should be meaningful to the company and should also demonstrate the research capability required for an AQF 8 honours pathway.
You will continue to develop selected course-specific capabilities relevant to your discipline, using the company context to generate evidence of advanced technical, analytical, creative or professional growth. Assessment is centred on an individual evidence-based portfolio that demonstrates research engagement, problem framing, contribution to company work, professional development, reflection, and the application of selected course-specific skills.
