Must be enrolled in postgraduate course M6009, through the DFAT Australia Award, with the placement in the Philippines.

Overview

You will begin your journey through the theoretical content of the cases you will confront in daily practice. The focus is on natural disease, supplemented by the very special circumstance of sexual assault. You will understand how to conclude and formulate the cause of death and properly complete a death certificate. In the mortuary you will consolidate your basic autopsy skills with a particular focus on removing and examining the organs of the chest and abdomen, dissecting and examining the lungs, heart and pelvic viscera.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Identify and discuss the pathology of common natural causes of sudden and unexpected death in the Philippines.

  2. 2

    Identify and discuss the main pathologies of forensic significance in the heart, lungs, brain, gastro-intestinal system and genito-urinary system.

  3. 3

    Analyse the approach to the autopsy examination in a case of suspected sexual assault, including the use of special investigations.

  4. 4

    Appraise the approaches taken to concluding causes of death in general and in particular cases.

  5. 5

    Conduct an internal examination of the thoracic and abdominal cavities under supervision, including preparation and dissection of organs.
