Overview
This unit will enable you to investigate application of genomic analysis in clinical cases. A range of interactive learning modules involving case-based scenarios will encourage you to problem solve and apply your learning to authentic clinical cases. Discussions with peers and experts will provide you with deep learning and networking opportunities. You will acquire the knowledge and skills to evaluate a range of genetic tests for specific clinical scenarios and appreciate the importance of collaboration and information sharing with clinical staff. This unit is designed to equip you with practical, real world skills including variant curation skills which you will use to produce clinical genomics reports. You will investigate the potential for genomic testing to inform diagnoses and clinical management for patients and their families, while developing an appreciation of the importance of informed consent and counselling in genomic testing and the ethical issues surrounding genomics in medicine.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Evaluate and identify the appropriate genetic tests, and their limitations, for use in clinical cases;
- 2
Recognise multidisciplinary nature of genomic testing and important of communication between clinical and laboratory staff;
- 3
Relate importance of relevant clinical information and its application in genomic analysis;
- 4
Apply the principles of variant curation in classifying clinical variants;
- 5
Relate how variant classification enhances clinical care;
- 6
Apply principles of biomedical ethics to, and investigate psychosocial implications of, genomic testing.

- Teaching approachOnline learning
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
Weekly, an average of:
- 3 hours of lectures, teacher directed activities (including cases), and online material
- 4 hours of interactive learning through tutorials and workshops and
- 17 hours of self-directed study per week
You will be presented with patient cases that require genome analytics techniques to be applied. These techniques will first be taught in interactive workshops and then you will apply these techniques to the cases they are provided.
During workshops you will be involved in active learning activities, applying the unit content to scenarios and patient cases.
Educational content, exercises and interactive lessons will be provided in the online-learning environment. All lecture material will be provided online so as to ensure face to face time is spent in workshops and active-based learning.
The online and activity learning will both involve problem-based learning, where students must apply their knowledge to new problems.
