Overview
This unit covers the patient assisted reproductive technology (ART) experience from a requirement for accessing this technology, seeking treatment options, pre-cycle preparation and ovarian stimulation. You will learn the theory behind all key embryology laboratory principles, including oocyte pick-up, sperm preparation, embryo culture, vitrification and embryo transfer. You will learn how the principles of embryo culture (temperature, pH, osmolarity and air quality) are applied in a human IVF laboratory to ensure embryo growth and development is not compromised. You will be able to confidently perform embryo selection based on morphology, and will have an appreciation for emerging embryo selection strategies. Embryo biopsy and the advanced field of preimplantation genetic testing of embryos will also be covered. You will be exposed to the latest research and technology in the field through experienced lecturers and industry experts and will be encouraged to consider the evolution and implementation of reproductive technologies from an ethical perspective. In an Australian context, you will evaluate the industry from a variety of stakeholder perspectives, including the current legislation and regulation that governs IVF practice.
