Overview

Design for Manufacturing equips you with the confidence to engage with industry when developing products from prototype through to manufacture. This unit focuses on learning that will help you optimise your designs to be ready for manufacturing, focusing on fabrication, product assembly and testing, procurement, shipping, delivery, service, and repair and analyses all aspects of the product development cycle to achieve best cost, quality, reliability, regulatory compliance, safety, time-to-market, and customer satisfaction. The unit is particularly relevant to those looking for a career in product design, but equally beneficial for those interested in the business of rigorously developing products for end markets.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critically evaluate and communicate manufacturing processes, their inherent benefits and constraints from cost to product lifecycle;

    Apply Design for Manufacturing thinking and principles to practical design outcomes;

    Carry out structural-integrity engineering processes to assess material performance and characteristics for manufacturing;

    Understand, evaluate and communicate the principles governing standardisation, repeatability and quality assurance to viably manufacture designed objects;

  5. 5

    Understand and apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the discipline practice.
