Overview
This unit examines, in depth, the cells and molecules of the immune system and how their functions are integrated to form an effective immune system that can fight infection. You will explore innate immunity, lymphocyte development, antigen processing and presentation, adaptive cellular and humoral immunity, central and peripheral tolerance, and immune regulation. You will consolidate your skills in searching and critically reviewing the literature, in assignment writing, and in oral presentation.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Evaluate the contributions of cells and molecules to the immune system;
- 2
Explain how the immune system responds to infection and disease;
- 3
Describe and distinguish how differing arms of the immune response are integrated and regulated;
- 4
Examine and compare the innate and adaptive immune systems and how these discriminate self from non-self;
- 5
Critically appraise experimental data, cutting edge technologies, and the immunological literature and demonstrate skills in oral and written communication.

- Six hours of self-directed learning per week.
This unit is taught using a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures are primarily used to deliver key information and concepts associated with cellular and molecular immunology. Tutorials comprise active, student-centered, and peer-assisted learning to engage you in conceptual thinking, develop skills to assist with the major assignment, and to discuss and consolidate teaching material in smaller groups.
