Overview
This unit aims to introduce you to various aspects of laboratory immunology. The course is laboratory based with small group in-class discussions to ensure a thorough theoretical understanding of techniques. Topics include production of polyclonal antisera and monoclonal antibodies, purification of antibodies, structure and properties of immunoglobulins (antibodies), electrophoresis and other techniques for detection of antigen/antibody reactions. Diagnostic immunology techniques may include immunofluorescence and microscopy, flow cytometry, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and analysis of plasma proteins. You will also develop core competencies in laboratory skills including record keeping, calculations, and safe work practices

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Conduct common immunology laboratory experimental techniques, laboratory skills and calculations in preparation for practice;
- 2
Demonstrate ethical, safe, and competent scientific work-practices in the laboratory setting;
- 3
Apply immunology knowledge and skills to novel experimental contexts;
- 4
Accurately record, analyse and report experimental outcomes to a variety of audiences;
- 5
Synthesise and present experimental findings in the context of relevant scientific literature.
Workload and teaching

- Teaching approachActive learning
- One 5-hour laboratory class;
- One to two hours of directed/self-directed pre-class preparation and
- Five to six hours of self-directed learning activities per week.
This unit is comprised of laboratory-based classes designed to teach you laboratory skills and techniques used in research and diagnostic immunology through a hands-on approach. Teaching will occur in small groups and will be complemented by in-class discussions to consolidate the theory behind the techniques, and assist you with data analysis and scientific writing. Pre-class online videos will introduce you to the underlying theoretical knowledge of the techniques that you will perform during the laboratory classes.
