Overview
This unit considers new debates and contemporary developments in the application of international human rights law. It is concerned with human rights standards as they exist in international law, and the international and comparative mechanisms for enforcing these standards. The unit will consider a selection of specific contemporary issues in human rights law, including Indigenous rights, the right to a healthy environment, limitations to human rights (e.g. derogation in time of emergency) and some issues of reform, enforcement, efficacy and critique of human rights standards.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of international human rights standards by evaluating current human rights enforcement mechanisms at the international/regional level.

Investigate, analyse and communicate information, problems, concepts and theories in relation to a range of human rights.

Conduct research in the context of various human rights, by reference to the case law of the UN treaty monitoring committees and regional human rights courts.

Evaluate complex ideas and concepts relevant to international human rights law in light of contemporary human rights issues.
