Overview
This unit is designed to provide international students and students with prior qualifications from overseas, in particular those from civil law countries, with a general understanding of the operation of the Australian legal system and common law systems more generally, including the structure and content of cases and the main principles of statutory interpretation, and with the legal research and communication skills necessary for postgraduate legal research and writing

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Apply knowledge and understanding of recent developments in relation to the rules of precedent and application of statutes to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning with creativity and initiative;

Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex legal information, problems, concepts and theories in relation to the operation of the Australian legal systems;

Conduct research into the common law systems more generally, including the structure and content of cases based on knowledge of appropriate research principles and methods; and

Use cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate at an abstract level complex ideas and concepts relevant to case law, statutes, and advanced legal research.
