Overview
The unit will examine the administration and operation of elections in both established and emerging democracies. We will compare and contrast various countries’ granting of the right to vote, restrictions on that right, design of electoral institutions, regulation of political parties, organization of political campaigns, regulation of campaign finance, and provision of judicial review of election-related issues, among other topics. We will also examine the increasing risk of cyberattacks and other forms of foreign interference in elections. Students should complete the unit with a strong appreciation for the diversity of electoral institutions and arrangements, and informed opinions about potential reform proposals.
