Overview
The rapidly-growing capabilities and increasing presence of algorithms, machine-learning and AI-based systems raise pressing questions about the governance, ethics, and accountability of these technologies. This unit will guide you through the debates about the theories, principles, and values that should guide the development and use of digital technologies to ensure transparency, accountability, and good governance. In particular, you will examine the governance mechanisms that currently exist in this area and asks students to consider what further mechanisms should be introduced to minimise the risks and possible downsides of the implementation of technology.
