Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to the concept and categories of intellectual property and the intersections with new and emerging digital technologies. You will learn to evaluate the rationales for and the nature and objectives of a broad range of intellectual property rights in a national setting and with some regard to international settings.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Demonstrate an understanding of the key types of intellectual property and the legal principles which underpin them as they apply to both digital technologies and the outputs of digital technologies.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the key issues and policy debates about the application of intellectual property concepts to digital technologies and the outputs of digital technologies.

    Research, interpret, evaluate and synthesise information from a range of sources to be able to formulate a persuasive view on the role of intellectual property in its application to the digital domain and communicate this view to a specified audience.

    Critically reflect on the role and effectiveness of intellectual property law in addressing the social and economic opportunities and risks arising from the use of digital technologies.
