Requisites

Enrolment rules

Co-requisite: You must be enrolled in an engineering course to enrol in this unit.

Overview

This unit provides you with the necessary skills and knowledge in solid mechanics to confidently analyse and design engineering components and structures with particular reference to the aerospace industry. Each part of the unit contrasts theory and practical application in order to impart a practical appreciation of the knowledge gained. The role of approximate methods of analysis and their interaction with practical situations is highlighted. Constant use is made of real-life problems from the aerospace industry

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Analyse the behaviour of structures under mechanical loads via free body diagrams, determining the mechanical stresses and structural deformations that arise.

  2. 2

Apply stress-strain relations in conjunction with elasticity and material properties.

  3. 3

Analyse stiffness and flexibility matrices for simple elements and structures.

  4. 4

Appraise complex solid mechanics problems and use knowledge and skills to develop simplified models and generate accurate solutions.

  5. 5

Apply structural analysis theory to predict the performance and reliability of structures under a combination of different loadings.

  6. 6

Select appropriate materials for aerospace systems based on consideration of the properties of these materials under aerodynamic loads

  7. 7

Predict typical failure mechanisms for aerospace systems, including buckling fracture, fatigue and yield.

Workload and teaching

  • Assessments2 hours
  • Lectures12 hours
  • Practical activities36 hours

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
