Overview
This unit will help you to develop a systematic method of capturing design requirements, tools for ideation, estimation and decision-making in an aerospace context. Primary and secondary manufacturing processes, assembly techniques. Engineering graphics for problem-solving, manufacturing communication and ideation. Report writing, teamwork in solving design problems involving the integration of mechanical elements in prototype conception, construction and testing.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
apply engineering design techniques to solve aerospace engineering problems
- 2
construct engineering technical drawings by hand or using CAD, to communicate concepts, detail designs, assemblies and manufacturing intent
- 3
design a prototype device and validate its real-world performance to comply with safety and specific rules
- 4
manage a complex engineering project within the limitations of cost, human factors, sustainability and rules or standards compliance
- 5
interpret the technical issues and performance of the prototype device built.

- Teaching approachActive learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
Workshops
Workshop sessions can be thought of as interactive and academic-guided active sessions. You will work on the problems and activities presented to both the individual and the small groups. Examples of student work will be discussed and reviewed. Some of these activities will be completed outside class as homework tasks. This work will be submitted digitally via Moodle. At the end of the semester, marks will be allocated based on evidence of the completion of these activities. We recommend that you keep a scan (or other digital records) of complete worksheets as a backup in case you lose your printed hardcopies during the semester.
Software sessions
Software sessions will be utilised for you to complete CAD practice and weekly-assessed CAD tasks. They will also allow you to work with other students on the major team projects (which includes a CAD submission) and other upcoming assessments. Each team will be allocated a private, online working space and a means of accessing experts. Teams must leave promptly at the end of the session to make way for the next group. Outside of scheduled session times, you are encouraged to employ appropriate online collaboration tools to engage in continued group project work. Such a venue cannot be provided outside of allocated session times.
