Overview
In this course you will gain an understanding of the policy rationale and parameters governing personal injury scheme design, covering underwriting, benefit delivery and regulation, and the ability to recognise when and why schemes are underperforming.
Scheme design involves the complex integration of scheme objectives and the scheme design process is rarely carried out in isolation of political intervention (often the impetus for change), stakeholder input (particularly lawyers) and media commentary. This unit will explore some of these complexities.
Throughout the course of this unit, a number of topics relating to scheme design will be covered:
- Philosophical underpinnings of personal injury scheme design
- Fundamentals of scheme design
- Workers’ Compensation insurance in Australia
- CTP Insurance in Australia
- Compensation, Care and support for those Catastrophically Injured
- Other personal injury insurance arrangements
- Challenges and emerging issues in personal injury compensation scheme design.
A key activity in this course is the 3 day “Residential intensive” teaching period. Held after 5 weeks of online learning, the residential intensive provides you with the opportunity to foster new professional networks with students, course presenters and other industry experts in an environment that fosters critical thought and robust discussion. Students work together in teams to design their own scheme response to a particular challenge, and are provided the opportunity to present their solution to a panel of industry experts. The residential intensive may be delivered in an online format, however students will get the most benefit out of attending in person.
